Our Research and Papers
The goal of our RESCUE Stroke Caregiver Research program is to advance knowledge and clinical practice by improving stroke caregiving and the recovery of Veterans and other adults who have experienced a stroke. To address this goal, our investigative team conducted 5 projects spanning over 10 years. Throughout these projects, the RESCUE stroke caregiver website, the COPE framework, and the problem-solving intervention have remained underlying themes.
In our first project we evaluated and promoted the investigator-created, senior-friendly RESCUE website using focus groups; interviews and surveys with clinicians and caregivers; cognitive usability testing, and Webtrends analysis. In the second project, a clinical demonstration project, we used a single-group pre- and post-test design to evaluate the content and outcomes of the RESCUE problem-solving intervention.
Third, we conducted the SPiRE pilot study, a four-arm randomized clinical trial (4-week intervention, 8-week intervention, attention control, standard care), to refine our methods and determine the feasibility and acceptability of the RESCUE intervention. The fourth project, called RESCUE CREST merit study, was a large, randomized clinical trial to investigate the effects of a discharge planning and transitional care intervention that was delivered in one session over the phone and 8 sessions on an online messaging center. Our last project is ongoing and is testing a modified and culturally relevant RESCUE intervention that is delivered in Spanish.
